Obituary: Alverna M. Merkel (June 14, 1918 - August 22, 2006)

Mrs. Alverna Mae (Weicker) Merkel, age 88, of Pottsville, Pa., formerly of Coaldale and Walker Twp., died Tuesday, August 22, 2006, at HCR Manor Care of Pottsville in Pottsville, Pa.

A Blythe Twp. High School Graduate, Alverna worked as a Cutter for the former Bubels Factory, Tamaqua, Pa. Alverna worshiped at the Emanuel Evangelical Church.

Born in Tuscarora, Pa she was the daughter of the late Charles Weicker and the late Edith (Blew) Weicker.

Preceded in death by her Husband Charles S. Merkel Oct. 10, 2005, Son Curtis R. Merkel Sept. 15, 2004, Daughter Ruthann Harahus Oct. 15, 2004, Sisters Madelyne Cahill and Doris DeAngelo.

Alverna has been cared for by her daughter-in-law Myrtle E. Merkel of Andreas, Pa. and Son-in-law Peter Harahus of Weatherly, Pa.

Four Grandchildren and Five Great Grandchildren Survive their Granny.

Miss Marilyn D. (Nelson) Nelson, age 54, of East Union Street Tamaqua, Pa., died Thursday, August 17, 2006, at St. Luke VNAEP Bethlehem, Pa.

Marilyn was Protestant by faith. She was a 1970 Tamaqua High School Graduate, and Graduate of Empire Beauty School. Marilyn worked as a aide for Redco of Pottsville, assisiting in the care of the mentally challenged.

Born in Coaldale, the daughter of the late Russell Nelson and Illomay (McLaughlin) Nelson.

Survived by her Five Sisters, Mrs. Renae B. (Nelson) Ziegler Mrs. Rochelle B. (Nelson) Lazarchick wife of Sam Mrs. Rosalind D. (Nelson) Hosler Miss Karen I. Nelson Mrs. Robin J. (Nelson) Krapf wife of Bob all of Tamaqua, Pa.

Elaine was a member of Ben Salem U.C.C. of Lehighton were she and her husband served as Sextons for many years, and she coordinated the Altar Flowers for the church. And Avid Quilter and Sewer she made quilts for many local families as well as presenting Ex-Change Students with gifts to return to their native lands. Elaine's quilts are now in Holland and Turkey. Her work history was a storied one, from cooking and waitressing at the Spring Dell Drive Inn, to working in the Cannery at Wos-Wit Farms, while finally working in the Green House's for Green Leaf Ent. and Sensinger Green Houses of Lehighton.

In addition to her Hobbies and work responsiblities Elaine provided for her family as a homemaker, and was active in the Friendship Grange, and Big Creek Flower Club, of Lehighton, Pa.

Born in East Penn Twp. she was the daughter of the late Warren Bowman and the late Luella (Muthard) Bowman.

Preceded in death by her husband, Howard J. Sheckler, Sr. July 27, 2003

Jessica B. Diekman (June 20, 1987 - August 9, 2006)


Jessica B. Diekman, 19 of 523 Green Lane Drive, Andreas died Wednesday 8-9-2006 as a result of a single vehicle accident.

Born in Abington, PA, she was the daughter of Karl F. & B. Christine (Lempa) Diekman.

Jessica was currently a sophmore at Shippensburg University studying Diagnostic Imaging. She was a 2005 graduate of Tamaqua High School were she was involved with volleyball, swimming and track and field.

She was currently employed for the summer by the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Survivors: Parents, Sisters Brandy C. of Coaldale, Karla N. at home, niece Chloe Diekman, Grandparents: Mildred (Yerkes) Lempa of Lehighton, Henry Diekman & Nancy (Thomsen) Diekman of S.Hampton, PA.

She was preceded in death by a sister Kelly M. Diekman and grandfather Raymond Lempa.

Obituary: Regina R. Sinn (January 10, 1926 - August 3, 2006)

Mrs. Regina R. "Jeannie" (Riley) Sinn, age 80, of 520 East Elm Street Tamaqua, Pa., died Thursday, August 3, 2006, at her Son Kenneth and Daughter in laws Mary Sinn's home in Tamaqua, Pa. She was the wife of Kenneth C. Sinn and they were married for 59 years.

Born in Tamaqua she was the Daughter of the late Frank & Helen (Fulmer) Riley.

Mrs. Sinn was employed by Jane Ann Fashions in Seek as a sewer for many years.

She was a member of St. Jerome's Catholic Church in Tamaqua, a 1944 Graduate of St. Jerome's High School, a member of C.W.E.A, a member of St. Vincent DePaul Society, Bingo worker for the church and a former cook for St. Jerome's Rectory.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years Kenneth C. Sinn

Born in Chance, Md. she was the daughter of the late William Bennett and the late Evelyn (Simpson) Bennett.

She is also survived by her Husband Donald Ralph Vinson,

Born in Lansford, she was the daughter of the late William Gillespie and the late Estelle (Monroe) Gillespie.

She is also survived by her sister Mrs. Jean G Wildoner of Lansford

Obituary: Florence J. Sverchek (May 24, 1930 - August 1, 2006)













Florence Sverchek,76, of 601 East Ridge Street, Lansford died August 1, 2006 at the residence of her daughter Marcia, and son-in-law, Jack Richards of Slatington, with whom she resided during her illness. She was the widow of Captain Martin Kalista who passed in 1962. Florence was later married to Al M. Sverchek.

She was retired from the Panther Valley School District. She previously worked at Costello's restaurant in Coaldale, the Dinner Bell restaurant in Nesquehoning and Bright's store in Lansford.

Born in Lansford, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (Gawlik) Baran. She was a member of SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church, Lansford and was active in the choir. She was a graduate of St. Ann's High School.

Surviving are her daughter and son in law, son Joseph Kalista and 2 grandchildren, Elizabeth and Andrew of Barnesville.

Sisters: Lorretta Granger of Allentown and Sister Joselle of Shenadoah, along with her dear friends.

She was preceded in death by sisters Agnes Sterusky, Marion Filmon, Stella Lake, Catherine Bortnick, and seven brothers, Stanley, Michael, Mitchell, John, Rev. L. Joseph, A. Paul and Joseph.

Florence demonstrated her love of life through her radiant smile, enjoyment of simple pleasures and wish for everyone to "have a good day". She was engulfed by the unconditional love given by her faithful golden retriever companion. She was instrumental in sharing her joy and spirit by providing encouragement to other cancer survivors. She was often heard saying " Have faith in God" and "Don't give up". Florence wanted to express her sincere thanks for the excellent care and love she received from numerous health care providers throughtout the Lehigh Valley, especially her "family" at the Lehigh Valley Women's Center Center of Allentown.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held a t 10 o’clock A.M., Saturday August 5, 2006 from SS. Peter & Paul R.C.C. 213 East Bertsch Street Lansford, Pa. Calling Hours will be from 8:30 A.M. to 9:30 A.M. on Saturday morning from the Holmes – Griffiths Funeral Home, 200 East Bertsch Street Lansford, Pa., and Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

Jim retired in 2002 from Knoll Manufacturing East Greenville, Pa. and since retirement has worked as a Rest Area Attendant at the Route # 80 Rest Stop in White Haven, Pa. A member of the East End Fire Co. Tamaqua, and the Shartlesville Rod & Gun Club.. .

Born in Tamaqua he was the son of the late Clement Fulmer and the late Genevieve (Dintamin) Fulmer.

He is also survived by his Two Sons, James J. Fulmer, Jr. & his wife Helen Mr. Michael T. Fulmer & his wife Sherry of Quakake, Pa.

One Brother, Brother-Mr. Clement J Fulmer of Jim Thorpe, Pa.

Two grandchildren Derek & Tony Fulmer

Preceded in death by a son John in 1985 and a daughter Kelly Ann Fulmer 1994

Arrangements are being handled by E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home, Inc., 655 East Broad Street Tamaqua, Pa., where the family will receive friends from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM Friday, August 4, 2006. Funeral service will be at 11 o'clock A.M. from the funeral home with Rev. William Linkchorst officiating.

Interment will be at St. Jerome R.C.C. Cemetery in Tamaqua, Pa.
